The preschool core is a 10-module comprehensive early literacy curriculum for early childhood educators and administrators. This series has been developed to assist in understanding the ways in which early childhood educators can provide quality learning experiences and intentional teaching strategies that support the early literacy development of young children. This series helps teachers “connect the dots” among Ohio’s Early Learning Standards, Get It, Got It, Go!, ELLCO and research-based practices as they document their own professional growth. There are a limited number of opportunities for individualized coaching connected to the series. Pending approval, participants may receive course credit from various institutions of higher learning for attending the entire series.
Ohio's demographics are rapidly changing and families, teachers and policy makers have become increasingly aware of the need to address the linguistic diversity of the state's preschool students, many who are experiencing a formal educational experience outside of the home for the first time. This three part module will provide teachers, administrators and literacy specialists with a foundational understanding of cultural differences and language acquisition as well as the knowledge and tools to help children prepare for transition into kindergarten and elementary school.
The document A Way of Knowing provides teachers with information about the importance of intentional observation as well as protocols for data collection, analysis and interpretation. This course uses the document to provide guidance to link data to classroom practice and teaching strategies.
This course provides guidance for working with parents and creating a rich environment for supporting and challenging early literacy skills.
This course provides teachers with knowledge around the creation of conditions to foster talk along with instructional approaches for the development of oral language.
A new module surrounding Oral Language and Preschool English Language Learners. More information to come soon.
This course provides teachers with guidance for working with letters and words. The sessions will help teachers to understand the meaning of and strategies for teaching phonemic awareness.
In this course, teachers will understand how to help children move from scribbles to words in addition to ways to evaluate children’s early writing to understand children’s developing knowledge of print.
The use of quality literature and story time are important tools for introducing concepts of print and focused strategies that support knowledge of words and sounds. This course provides knowledge and skills related to these tools.
The priority of this professional development is for Teacher Leaders to mentor/coach classroom teachers in implementing effective literacy strategies into their daily routines that will affect child outcomes. Participants will learn coaching techniques and create a progress portfolio that will illustrate teacher growth and the transferring of “additive knowledge” gained from state-wide professional development into transforming literacy practices in the early childhood setting. Teacher Leaders will be provided support by their local Early Language and Literacy Specialist.
